Did you know that hiking is the most popular form of exercise in France?

Over 27 million French people explore the country’s breathtaking scenery on foot, and get the bonus of doing some exercise at the same time.

We’ve selected four of the best trails in the Côte d’Azur for hikers to explore.

1 – The Cap d’Antibes coastline trail

Known for its strong sea winds, this trail has been dubbed “Tirepoil” (literally “hair pull” in English) for its ability to leave hikers’ hair dishevelled. In spite of this, this hike is beloved of Côte d’Azur residents and tourists alike.

It is about 5 km long and follows the southern coast of the Cap d’Antibes. Each step reveals something new, from turquoise waters to soaring cliffs and glamorous 19th century buildings. Are you ready to take on a trail that will (almost) sweep you off your feet?

2 – La Croix des Gardes

Standing 213 metres above sea level, this hill to the west of Cannes provides a sensational view of the Boulevard de la Croisette and the Lérins islands.

It is also the site of a forest park offering a number of trails ranging from 1.5 km to 5.2 km in length. The park is also home to a fitness track and picnic benches. It’s the ideal place to visit as a family.

3 – Saint Jean Cap Ferrat circular route

This hike explores Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, a former fishing village that has become the haunt of some of the richest people in the world. The 6 km walk starts from the port, offering views of the chalk cliffs that soar above crystal-clear waters.

Along the route you will see breathtaking mansions and jaw-droppingly large yachts. Find all the practical information you need for this hike on this page created by the Alpes-Maritimes local government.

4 – The Massif de l’Estérel

The 32,000-hectare Estérel mountain range is known for its red-coloured rock and features a wide range of trails for hiking, mountain biking and even horse riding. The official Estérel website makes it easy to choose the right trail for you, suggesting routes based on your preferred search criteria.

Whichever trail you choose, keep an eye out for the fairy Estérelle who, according to legend, helps women become more fertile. Mythical creature notwithstanding, this nature reserve is really worth a visit and gives you the chance to discover the region in a different light.
