Tourists may be heading home, but those who truly know the French Riviera understand that the season is only just beginning. Here’s why.
The sea is still warm, often even better than in June. Thanks to the Mediterranean’s thermal inertia, the water has spent the entire summer absorbing heat, remaining pleasantly warm well into late September, and sometimes even early October. The result? You can swim comfortably, without the crowds of previous months, and often enjoy warmer water than at the start of summer.
Prices return to more reasonable levels without compromising on quality. Accommodation, restaurants, water activities, and excursions all become more affordable compared to the peak of July and August, while the sunshine, service, and atmosphere remain just as enjoyable. This is when you experience the Riviera like a local, not like a tourist paying peak-season prices.
There’s finally room to breathe. Beaches regain their space, queues disappear from museums and along the Promenade des Anglais, and service becomes more relaxed and attentive. The French Riviera returns to its true self: less crowded, more authentic, whether in the old town’s narrow streets or at café terraces where you can truly take your time.
